Bon Iver
Bon Iver was the number one pick on my year end list, so it’s no surprise that when this EP dropped I found plenty to like. It’s just four songs. Apparently they were recorded during the “For Emma” sessions but just didn’t make the album. I can see why. These songs have a distinctly different feel from the album. They are a little more conventional. But still fantastic.
This track here is amazing. Justin Vernon is using overblown autotune ala Kanye West to magnificent effect. Stripped down to nothing but harmonizing vocals, this is the 2009 progeny of the Beatles’ Anthology version of Because. For a less skilled performer this could just be a gimmick, but here Vernon lets the autotune amplify all the expression and harmonics of his voice. Beautiful.
