Nine Inch Nails
I recently discovered NIN is from my newly adopted hometown of Cleveland. So here’s a track of the latest album, The Slip.
Along with Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails is pushing the limits of music distribution. NIN’s latest is available totally free on their website. So right away I’m down with the politics/economics of the album. Of course there is the option to purchase physical media – CD or vinyl. But the band is giving away MP3, FLAC, WAV, and 24/96 Hi-Def audio versions of the album for free. Can’t complain about the price. The site even says “we encourage you to remix it, share it with your friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers, etc.” Cool.
This track is loaded with the harsh, edgy synth beats, and industrial guitar loops that NIN is known for, but I’ll be damned if I don’t hear some great riff-based, droning guitar and the woe-is-me lyrics of the North Mississippi blues in this song.

I’ve got a special place in my heart for NIN; years of teenage angst or something, I guess. Try some of their stuff from “With Teeth”. About half of the album is eh but every other song is pure gold. The song “Everyday” described a lot of my feelings towards my VA months during my intern year.
Thanks for the suggestions.
